Background on Gist Endowed Chair

Dr. George GistThe George R. and Genevieve B. Gist Endowed Chair position in the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership was established with a focus on administration and leadership in Extension education. The chair holder, Dr. Keith Smith works in collaboration with other faculty and Extension professionals to mentor faculty, conduct applied research, foster discussion on leadership skills, and provide leadership development opportunities to enhance the capacity of Extension professionals in Ohio and nationally. The Gist Endowed Chair provides support to address the contemporary issues that face the field of Extension through a focused research agenda that involves faculty, Extension professionals, and students.

Goals

The Gist Chair Research Team has established goals for its research and scholarly agenda in Extension education and leadership:

  • Provide focus on a research agenda that addresses current and emerging issues in Extension education with an emphasis on administration and leadership;
  • Increase and strengthen opportunities for collaboration among undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and Extension professionals to conduct research in Extension education; and
  • Integrate and disseminate findings that will inform Extension practices related to organizational structure, staffing and leadership.

Research Areas of Focus

Organizational Development and Organizational Change

  • Explore changing organizational structures and the impact on Extension’s mission; assess the public’s views and attitudes about Extension education.
  • Identify approaches to restructuring and staffing models; describe the benefits, costs, and challenges; and share promising approaches for different situations.
  • Identify trends and directions (e.g., changing funding streams), including critical analysis.
  • Identify needs of stakeholders and competencies for Extension professionals to meet those needs.

Leadership Development

  • Explore leadership skills and competencies needed for Extension professionals and clientele to thrive and lead in 21st century organizations and communities.
  • Identify current leadership issues and conduct applied research to support leadership development.
  • Encourage dialogue and effective succession planning to support organizational continuity.
