Shannon Washburn has been reappointed as chair of the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership (ACEL) at The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). The reappointment is effective July 1 through June 30, 2028.
Washburn, who is also the college’s Sanford G. Price and Isabelle P. Barbee Chair in Teaching, Advising, and Learning, joined ACEL as professor and chair in 2020. He previously served as an assistant dean of Academic Programs for the College of Agriculture at Kansas State University, from 2015 to 2020. In that role, he led the college’s student retention efforts, facilitated professional development opportunities for faculty and instructional staff on teaching and advising, and coordinated the course and curriculum processes for the college.
While at Kansas State, Washburn also served as a professor of agricultural education and as an associate professor of agricultural education. He earned his PhD in agricultural education from the University of Missouri, his Master of Science in secondary education, and his Bachelor of Science in agricultural education from Kansas State.
“We look forward to Shannon’s continued leadership with his reappointment as professor and chair of ACEL,” said Cathann A. Kress, Ohio State vice president for agricultural administration and CFAES dean. “He brings an accomplished and unique skillset, which ensures continued success within the department and the college.”
During his second term as professor and chair of ACEL, Washburn will continue to foster effective, collegial, cooperative, and productive relationships among students, staff, and faculty within the department. He has also been tasked with developing a vision for the OSU Leadership Center, and its advancement of the goals of the department and the college. Washburn will also support the success and development of undergraduate and graduate education programs.
Finally, he will promote collaborations with university partners and external stakeholders to increase state, national, and international presence.
“I’m excited with the opportunity to continue working with our talented students, staff, and faculty toward our goal of creating a thriving and sustainable future by advancing excellence in communication, education, and leadership within the agricultural and broader community,” Washburn said. “I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to lead within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and to carry forward the rich tradition of excellence in our department and college.”
Washburn’s reappointment is subject to the approval of Ohio State’s Office of Academic Affairs and Board of Trustees.
